Black Spruce: A Sanctuary of Sophistication and Comfort

Yi Hsien Chiang Crafts Enveloping Residence with Industrial Elegance

In the realm of residential design, the Black Spruce project stands out as a beacon of tranquility and refined industrial style. Conceived by designer Yi Hsien Chiang, this residence reflects a unique blend of dark hues and sophisticated materials, offering a serene escape from the bustling world outside.

Yi Hsien Chiang's design philosophy is evident in the Black Spruce residence, where the interplay of color and material creates an atmosphere of security and stability. Rejecting the typical use of white and light colors, Chiang opts for a palette of warm dark shades, complemented by the tactile richness of matte stucco, leather, and glass. These choices are not merely aesthetic; they are a response to the client's preference for dark colors and a testament to Chiang's ability to translate individual desires into tangible design elements.

The residence's unique properties lie in its dual concepts of envelopment and penetration. Chiang approaches residential design from both macro and micro perspectives. On a larger scale, the design aims to provide a stress-free environment, utilizing textures and colors that evoke relaxation. On a more detailed level, transparency is achieved through strategic layout and material selection, such as moru glass and folding doors, which allow for seamless interaction between spaces while maintaining a sense of boundary.

Realization of the Black Spruce residence involved a careful selection of materials, including stucco, moru glass, and steel-brushed wood veneer. The application of stucco, with its multi-layer coating, plays a crucial role in reducing light reflection and creating an anti-glare effect, which is particularly beneficial in areas designed for comfort, such as living rooms and bedrooms. This meticulous attention to materiality not only enhances the visual appeal but also contributes to the overall sensory experience of the space.

Despite its modest footprint of 56.1 square meters, the residence feels open and comfortable, thanks to Chiang's strategic spatial planning. Originally configured with two bedrooms, a living room, and a dining room, the space was reimagined to better align with the client's lifestyle. The study room was relocated, and the central layout was optimized with a wall fitting that serves as the core of the residence, demonstrating Chiang's skill in maximizing functionality within limited spaces.

The project's success is also rooted in the designer's interaction with the client. Initial discussions revealed a discrepancy between the client's perception of industrial style and its common interpretation. Through dialogue and guidance, Chiang was able to refine the material and style choices, ultimately creating an ambiance that resonated with the client's vision. This collaborative process underscores the importance of understanding and meeting the client's needs while also pushing the boundaries of conventional design.

Concluding the Black Spruce project, it is clear that Yi Hsien Chiang has crafted more than just a living space; she has created a sanctuary that embodies both the enveloping warmth of a forest and the penetrating clarity of thoughtful design. This residence is not only a testament to Chiang's design prowess but also a celebration of the client's unique vision, culminating in a space that is both a personal retreat and a statement of sophisticated living.

With its Bronze A' Design Award accolade, Black Spruce is recognized for its exceptional design that harmonizes art, science, and technology. It stands as a prime example of how thoughtful design can enhance quality of life and contribute to a better world. The project, completed in February 2024 in Taiwan, is a testament to Yi Hsien Chiang's dedication to creating spaces that are both innovative and intimately attuned to the inhabitants' needs.
